L'installazione della webcam Philips PCVC 720K/20 (ToUCam XS) su Windows XP presenta dei problemi. Sono riuscito a risolvere in questo modo, grazie a delle informazioni trovate su internet, informazioni però molto lacunose. La Philips non supporta lo sviluppo di driver per questa webcam a quanto pare, perchè in pratica la compra da un altra ditta, ci stampa il suo marchio sopra e la rivende aggiungendo garanzia e supporto clienti, e non garantendola per Windows XP. Le informazioni che seguono indicano la procedura di installazione che ho completato io. Non mi assumo responsabità se intendete usare queste informazioni, fatelo a fostro rischio e pericolo.

Se installate il CD dei driver, infatti, vi verrà detto che la webcam non funziona con questo sistema operativo; voi ignorate tutti gli avvertimenti (prima o poi l'installazione si chiuderà con un errore, ma non sempre). L'importante è che installi il software (Philips VLounge). ATTENZIONE: a seconda della versione di Win XP che avete, il problema potrebbe già essere stato risolto, provate ad installare la webcam (cioè collegarla) e se vi dice "USB camera" o roba simile potete già installarla, scegliendo "cerca automaticamente i driver", che sono già inclusi nella vostra versione di XP. Potete ora usarla con il software installato dal CD.

Se invece l'hardware non viene riconosciuto (la vostra versione di XP non ha i driver), scaricate il file ToUcamWebUpdate12.exe che potete trovare su internet in vari posti (provate a cercare su Altavista o Google). Ci sono versioni aggiornate di questo software (13) ma a quanto pare non va bene. Una volta installato, dopo averlo avviato (bisogna essere collegati ad internet!) scegliere ToUcam XS, e scegliere 720/20 (in alto), dovrebbe però confermare che sul sito Philips non ci sono i driver giusti. Ok, chiudete tutto e fate ripartire il programma, stavolta scegliete 750 invece di XS, installate tutto, poi il programma probabilmente darà un errore, se non lo farà chiudetelo comunque e fatelo ripartire, stavolta dovrebbe presentarsi una schermata diversa ma anche se non appare provate a ripetere il procedimento di prima un'altra volta. Ora potete installare la webcam collegandola alla presa USB: Windows XP dovrebbe riconoscere che si tratta di una webcam USB, quando vi chiede dei driver fate fare la ricerca automatica e dovrebbe trovarli; ora potete usare il software installato dal CD per usarla! Insomma, non posso dar torno a chi non riesce ad installarla: è veramente una cosa assurda, ma gli costava davvero tanto sviluppare un driver?

The installation of Philips PCVC 720K/20 Webcam (ToUCam XS) on Windows XP is very complex. I've found some information on Internet, but they were incomplete. Philips doesn't provide any driver for Windows XP, because they buy the cam from another manifacturer, they print their logo on it and sell them with customer support only for the driver the original manifacturer provide. The following information worked for me, but might not work for you and produce collateral damage to the system. Use it at your own risk.

If you install the drivers from the CD, the setup will tell you that the driver doesn't work with this OS; you have to ignore all warning (but somethime the installation will crash - no problem). You only have to be sure that the bundled software was installed (Philips VLouge), don't worry about the drivers. NOTE: it has been reported that on some Windows version the webcam is correctly installed at this point, try to plug in the cam and wait for the system to indentify it: if Windows identify it as "USB camera" or similar, you can already install it, letting windows find automatically the drivers.

On other windows version, the hardware is not recognized at this stage, so you have to perform additional steps. You have to download ToUcamWebUpdate12.exe (try Google). There will be more recent version of this software (13 and more) but it seems that the new ones don't work. After downloading and installing it, launch it (you have to be connected to the Internet) and choose ToUcam XS, and 720/20 (at the top). The programm will tell you that the drivers are not available. Don't worry. Close the program, restart it and this time choose 750 instead of XS, go on and the program will crash. If it doesn't crash the first time you have to close and reopen it. At this time (maybe you need to close another time, if it doesn't crash) you should see a different output.
Ok, time to "plug and pray": plug the cam and pray that it will work. Now it should be identified correctly, try to use the software (Philips VLounge). I hope it works now, some people are correctly using the cam after following these steps.
As you can see, this installation progress is very unusual and rely on system crash and errors! Why doesn't Philips develop a correct driver for Win XP?
